Tangentes is a project that dates back 4 or 5 years. For different reasons, such as tours and projects of each of the musicians, it hasn’t been possible to materialise the project until now. From the beginnings there is only Santiago Rapállo and me. Santiago is one of the most versatile drummers I know. His adventures into other styles outside of jazz have diversified his language. His timbre and level of dynamics are an essential part of the sound of the group. I met Cristian Pérez a little while after he came to Spain, from Washington, D.C. The trio worked immediately. Cristian is melodic in his solos and solid in the bases. From the start he has been implicated in the project and modified the sound and work dynamic of the group .When we decided to add a soloist, the name of the English trumpet player, David Herrington immediately came to mind. I’ve known him for many years and we’ve played hundreds of gigs together. His trumpet sounds good playing on top of any base and the peculiarities of his phrasing, far from being too academic, make his sound personal and easily recognizable. I am indebted to Santiago, David and Cristian for the energy and creativity that they have put into this recording.
Tangentes I, is a project recorded in a little over ten hours. We decided to maintain the aesthetic sense of a live concert, instead of making the improvisations shorter or doing interminable takes . Most of the songs are first takes . The compositions suggest atmospheres, and using that as the point of departure, each improviser takes his own decisions. It’s teamwork.
